Lifescape Sound Score for Solo Cello - Ernest Bloch: Prayer

By BijaB

At its heart, Bloch's Jewish music is emotional, expressionist and despite a slow, sombre mood, is colored by an exotic ambience which reflects his increasingly Jewish voice.

For cello, "Prayer" has an atmosphere of intense inward feeling, and the piece is far less linked with virtuosity than with the power of expression and faith. This is the reason we chose it as part of the sound score for "Lifescape: A Video Portrait of Marshall Bennett" by video artist Lincoln Schatz.

We recorded Ken performing the piece at Bennett-Gordon Hall at the Ravinia Festival in the summer of 2013. Chris Willis was the recording engineer.

Ken brings a powerful and deep inner expression to the piece.

NOTE: This fabulous work of chamber music by Swiss composer Ernest Bloch, was completed in 1924.
